Charles Mingus was an influential bass player, pianist, bandleader and composer. He played among the greats like Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington and More. He was well known as a composer, his pieces having very inventive and raw melodies and solos. His band leading career was quite successful as well, and he is one of the only bass player band leaders of the time.

Victor Wooten is probably the most popular bass players of today's music. He has won five Grammy awards, and was even named Bass Player of the Year by Bass Magazine three times in a row. He is one of the premier electric bass players of our time, and is well known for his funk and slap style playing.

Ron Carter is a famous American jazz bassist that is still alive today. He has been on 2,221 recordings so far in his career, which makes him the most recorded jazz bassist ever. He played with the Miles Davis quintet for many years which really brought his playing to the ears of the public. He played among many of the great jazz artists of the 1960's. He was elected into the Down Beat jazz hall of fame in 2012 and won two Grammy awards in 1993 and 1998. Carter continued to play through the 2000's, and began teaching in universities like Julliard and Berklee soon after. He is still an active member of the jazz community today.

Paul Chambers was a popular bass player around the 50's and 60's. Though Paul's career was cut short by his death at a young age in 1969, Paul's intonation and virtuoso playing was quite influential. He was well known for his bowed bass solos, something that was not commonly done in the past.
